My husband grew up playing hockey, and went on to have a cool career in the sport - but I never played (despite being Canadian. I just dated the guys who did ;) So when our oldest started playing in kindergarten, it was all new to me! We were given some hand-me-down gear, and for some reason (probably because my hubs was a police officer and was ALWAYS working) it was up to me to do the dry run with the gear and make sure we had all the pieces of equipment we needed. I suited our little dude up, and it seemed to all be good?
Bbbbuuuttttt thankfully the hubs took a quick look at it all before we actually headed to the rink because i had made one teeny, tiny, little mistake... The hand-me-downs were from Ashley, a kiddo we didn't know but saw the name written on a few items. I assumed Ashley was a boy.... but Ashley was most definitely a girl. And that Jock strap? It was a Jill.... Whoops!
Anyway, I was given one rule and one rule only, that I had to abide by in any and every situation while hockey mom-ing. And I will pass it onto you, because it's important in this world. And despite all of our mama instincts, we need to stick to this rule.
Never. Ever. Go out on the ice.
When your kiddo goes down, and the coach/trainer runs out to check on him/her... you're going to want to go down there too.
But refrain, friend.
It's an unwritten rule that will make or break your kid's reputation in hockey, and united we stand... in the bleachers.
